M. Night Shyamalan recently partnered with Apple TV to develop a movie called Servant, which basically hints at a creepy family hiring a creepy nanny for their equally creepy baby which actually turns out to be a doll.
On top of the weirdness that’s going on in the household, you have to wonder what role Rupert Grint plays. Is he a villain conspiring with the servant to rob the family? Is he part of a bigger backstory? Why is the servant treating the doll like a real baby? Why is she so scary? Who the heck is the real threat in this entire convoluted scenario? Really, what’s going on?
M. Night Shyamalan is basically a hit and miss director and screenwriter. He has moments of brilliance in some of his films but there are times he misses the mark completely when he goes overboard with the conspiracies and the twists.
Personally, I’m not going to set high expectations from Servant but I’ve got to admit that it does have an interesting premise, and an aesthetically pleasing approach to the film.
I am sufficiently confused and curious and I have a good mind to watch it when Servant comes out on November 28. I think it has right the right amount of crazy to keep me satisfied. Fingers crossed.
