Dr. Romantic 2: Reasons Why I Ship Dr. Seo Woo Jin and Cha Eun Jae

It’s been over a week and I still haven’t gotten over Dr. Romantic 2. I keep watching my favorite clips everyday and it reminded me of the time that I was so into Fight for My Way and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. Apart from the cool medical procedures and the treatment of the drama, I was particularly drawn to this season’s main couple — general surgeon Dr. Seo Woo Jin and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Cha Eun Jae played by the talented duo of Ahn Hyeo Seop and Lee Sung Kyung. It took 16 episodes for them to finally become endgame but I felt that every moment was worth it.

Here are some of the reasons I ship these two. PS. There’s a couple of spoilers so continue on if you don’t mind it:

They Fit Perfectly Together. While other couples look cute with the tall guy short girl formula, Ahn Hyeo Seop and Lee Sung Kyung look picture perfect together because they are both tall. Seo Woo Jin doesn’t have to stoop to hug or kiss Cha Eun Jae and they can look each other directly in the eye when they speak, making their dialogues even more compelling. When he hugged her in that hallway, he enveloped her so beautifully it made my heart flutter.

Seo Woo Jin Never Panics — Except When It Comes to Cha Eun Jae. Even though he is the ultimate tsundere, Seo Woo Jin harbored a soft spot for Cha Eun Jae ever since they met in medical school. He always tried to protect her and look out for her welfare. When she was in danger of passing out when Dr. Park tried to get her involved in the Defense Minister’s second surgery, he stepped up to protect her, even though she initially thought he betrayed her. When she injured herself while protecting a battered wife, he panicked like there was no tomorrow, barking orders at the staff rapidly to get the supplies needed, all while keeping an eye on her the entire time. When Dr. Yang said something nasty to her, he was all ready to go to war.

They Have Each Other’s Back. They may not have directly addressed their feelings for each other because they were very competitive in medical school but Cha Eun Jae and Seo Woo Jin stuck their necks out for each other in more than one occasion. They took each other’s side against abusive seniors and even each other’s family members. They supported each other and had absolute faith in each other even though the rumors hint otherwise.

My heart simply melted when Seo Woo Jin called in Cha Eun Jae to repair the diaphragm tear for the second time without the aid of pills and basically professed his love for her in front of the entire OR. On the flipside, Cha Eun Jae went above and beyond when it came to Seo Woo Jin — whether it was confronting Hyun Joo by herself, or trying to take on loan sharks using her gangster connections. She was all about protecting Woo Jin.

He Respects Her Boundaries. Although it was frustrating to no end, I got why Seo Woo Jin never really crossed line. He respected Cha Eun Jae’s  decision and did not want to get in the way of her dreams of being the best in her career. He was waiting for her to give a go signal before he pursued his feelings for her. While it made sense, his prickly personality made it even harder for Eun Jae to gauge his true feelings for her. She did not even believe that he was expressing his love with the cups of coffee that he got her, or that he was jealous of her talking about her former crush on Dr. Bae because he kept pushing her away at every opportunity.

They Had Chemistry Even Back in Medical School. The backstory of going to medical school together was just the perfect set up to establish the love story of Seo Woo Jin and Cha Eun Jae. It was interesting how, despite the constant competition, Seo Woo Jin obviously softened when it came to Cha Eun Jae. He was intrigued by her from the beginning, watched her a lot and even listened to gossip about her without being obvious about it. They connected really well, but Cha Eun Jae’s single mindedness got in the way of really treating their alliance as a friendship. Seo Woo Jin asserted as much when he told Eun Jae that he knew her moods just by looking at her and it started way back in medical school. Swoon.

Reset was Their Love Language. I love this idea about the Reset and how on three occasions, it was just the perfect answer to everything. I loved that after two times of hinting at his feelings for her, it was finally Cha Eun Jae who took the final step and made the choice to be with Woo Jin.

Cuteness Overload. There were a lot of cute moments between these two but I loved the last one the most when he was being a baby and putting his foot down that she wasn’t allowed to stay in Geode for more than two days. In response, the hug and her statement that he was the most precious person to her was totally everything I stayed 16 episode to see.

It may still be a while before I get over this couple but I’m hoping they get a new project to work together on something lighter and more romantic. I actually want them to date in real life but that’s a wish for a later date. An #AhnLee project, please, drama gods!
