Godzilla vs. Kong Trailer: What’s going on?

I just checked out the Godzilla Vs. Kong trailer and it promises to deliver on an epic showdown between Godzilla, King of Monsters and Kong, King of the Apes aka The Eighth Wonder of the World. However, while it definitely hyped me up for the last installment in the Godzilla reboot franchise, I am left with a lot of questions by its end.

Synopsis: The scene starts out with a lengthy discussion about humanity needing Kong and how he is only able to communicate with one kid. The next scenes show him being transported by ship from Kong Island when he is attacked out of the blue by Godzilla. It turns out that they are the last two titans standing in the great war of monsters so one of them must reign supreme. The next thing we know, these giant beasts are destroying a city in an epic battle.

Now, here’s what got me confused. In the first two movies, Godzilla was presented as an ally of humanity. So why was there a need to call on Kong and why was he being considered as the last hope of mankind?

It would seem that the movie was also humanizing Kong in a way that they never did with Godzilla (well, except for that scene with Dr. Ishiro Serizawa in Godzilla: King of Monsters but it was mostly the good doctor who emoted). And because of this, it would seem that the film was framing Godzilla as the villain. This, after building up his character in two movies. Plus, this is his franchise to begin with so would it not make sense for him to at least have a reason to attack Kong so it does not appear as a random ambush?

Don’t get me wrong, I have a strong feeling where this is going and I’m all for seeing the story unfold but it was weird to say the least. Anyway, I love both of these monsters and I’m excited to see them have a go at it. COVID-19 go away so we could see it in theaters.
